I recently did the exam for the CIW java web developer certification. It again confirmed my doubts against certifications because the exam is focussed on apis, syntax and obscure functions one never uses (like the css user override syntax and I still remember the bit shifting with the programmer's exam). But yes, the necessary study is certainly worthwhile. Although I have quite a lot of experience in the field I discovered after one mock exam that I certainly needed to study. That tought me a lot of things about ejb's, jsp's, taglibs and other subjects that I didn't know or was only vagely aware of and I think it will definitely improve my desing and my coding.
I also liked this certification because it covers a lot of subjects like jsp and servlets, ejb, webservices and html instead of just one of these as with the sun certifications
..... and of course because it requires a lower pass score: 55% vs. 62, 64 or 68% for the sun certifications.
And yes, I passed
