August 9, 2004: Oracle and Java

For many years now Oracle has its focus on j2ee. At the same time many 'traditional' oracle developers (Designer, Forms, Reports) have no, or only a little knowledge of the new technologies. For some time now they (and the management) are thinking and discussing what to do: learn java or not.
All new features and technologies happen in j2ee and Designer and Forms will only be slightly updated, most of the time with j2ee related options. But we must be honest. The step to java is quite a big one: a new language, the completely different object-oriented concept and all the accompanying technologies like HTML, XML, HTTP, patterns etc. etc. Besides, j2ee is not a holy grail, often the choice for Designer/Forms is a very valid one. But on the other hand, since applications tend to become more and more complex, a combination of both technologies will be a valid option in many cases. But this is only possible when developers and architects are knowledgable with both.
Therefore, I would say that as an Oracle developer you, and the customers, only benefit when you extend your horizon to j2ee.
